Studio Unbound’s brand and packaging concept that aims to bridge the gap between energy drinks and coffee.

The Glasgow based studio designed the iced coffee brand to target consumers who may have outgrown the on-the-go energy drinks but aren’t quite ready or see themselves as the traditional coffee connoisseur.

Minimal in layout but bold in effect, Studio Unbound take inspiration from the late 80s and early 90s for this lively design concept. A block colour system consisting of three primary colours adorns the super glossy labels, which pop in contrast against the black matt bottles. These colours help to navigate flavour variations which is further complemented by the Cool Beans characters presented in witty black and white illustrations.

Each coffee bean character playfully portrays the flavour within, for example chocolate mocha is depicted as a bean dressed in retro-chic cap and high-tops, lying against a boombox which doubles as a bar of chocolate, pumpkin spiced latte has a cool bean spinning a pumpkin on his finger like a basketball, and double espresso features two beans giving each other a high five. These characters very much become the hero of the brand design, with their central position on the label, framed by the brand name in a thick black contemporary typeface.

The bottle shape, colour and texture take inspiration from the roasted coffee beans themselves, from the flowing curvature of the neck inspired by the crack in the centre of the bean, to the matt finish to resemble the texture, introducing a tactile element.
