Below we list the agencies holding the top 5 places and explore some of their latest award-winning designs.

5th place: Backbone Branding

In 5th place is Armenian-based Backbone Branding. A regular and very successful contender since 2013, Backbone Branding even won Pentawards ‘Agency of the Year’ in 2019.

AVYUN - Gold 2022

For this limited-edition wine, Backbone Branding were challenged with portraying the three stages of wine maturation which were to be depicted on three separate wine bottles. As wine ages, the grapes share their unique flavours handed down through generations, disclosing their age-old secrets. This narrative is signified on the embossed grape leaf at the centre of the bottle, which gradually fills with red wine, parallel with the blood that flows through our veins.

The distinct vigour and energy of the grape, flowing through the veins of the leaf and turning them red, reflects the aging and learning process. The word for energy and vigour is Avyun, which is the name chosen specifically for this wine. Furthermore, the flowing wine motif also distinguishes variation across the collection, as degrees of strength and age can be determined by the amount of wine that has flowed into the leaf.

This minimal, yet effective design won the agency a gold Pentaward for Beverages: Limited editions.

2nd place: Mousegraphics

After another awards ceremony, Greek design agency Mousegraphics are unshaken from second place which they have firmly held for the last three years.

Iliada Olive Snacks – Gold 2021

Mousegraphics’ work on Iliada's Olive Snacks innovatively put the snack in a game of tic-tac-toe, where sleek, globular olives make the winning alignments.

By strategically combining the hand drawings of the otherwise known “noughts and crosses” game with the photos of the olives, the label works well to make consumer’s take that second glance when passing it on the grocery store shelves.

The information provided, as well as how it is formatted, is clear and concise and does not distract from the images depicted. This serves to incite a sense of lightness, which aligns with how you feel when you snack on the bag's contents.

With the aim of retaining the freshness of the olives, Mousegraphics also chose a functional design with a smart resealable zipper.

ILIADA won Gold in Food: Savoury snacks, as well as receiving a People’s Choice award nomination.

1st place: Turner Duckworth

And finally, the much coveted 1st place in the Pentawards League table is held by international consulting agency Turner Duckworth. With one diamond and three platinum awards under their belts, alongside a long-running collection of gold, silver and bronze awards, it is unsurprising that the London-born agency rightfully holds the number one position.

Tres Generaciones Packaging and VIS - Gold 2021

To spark reconsideration in the increasingly competitive tequila market, Turner Duckworth set out to breath new life into Tres Generaciones Legacy Edition tequila, marrying together modernity and vintage aesthetics. At the heart of the redesign is the three stripes icon and its transition from rough to smooth. Holding a dual meaning, it represents not only the journey of the three generations of Sauza leaders as they perfected their tequila over time, but also the extra third distillation step in the production of Tres which results in a more refined finish.

The glass structure and brand colour palette were inspired by the original green decanters first used to launch the brand, resulting in a bottle that disrupts the traditional tequila shelf.

The sleek design earnt them gold in the Branding & Consumer: Re-design projects category in 2021.
