Tell us the story behind SERIESNEMO
SERIESNEMO is a design agency based in Barcelona. Our 30 years of experience and our specialization in the packaging and branding of beverage brands have made us a benchmark company among agencies specializing in the development of brands and products that are marketed in a bottle.
The name SERIESNEMO sums up very well what we are, combining two concepts that are fundamental to us. SERIES refers to our "core": the equal coexistence of graphic and industrial design. Our knowledge of processes and production methods is a differential value and a guarantee for our customers. NEMO means nameless or anonymous in Latin, making clear that a product must be the maximum expression of the brand values and not an author's design.
Which types of products and clients do you like to work with?
The ideal project for SERIESNEMO is one whose brand/product has not yet been born. In which the essence of the brand and the positioning of the product are still key factors that can be established.
We get our best professional contribution when we have proposed a product for any brave brand, which dares to be disruptive in its sector. With such a profile we get really motivated and give our best performance in a sector that presents new products and brands every day. Challenges make us feel comfortable!
What is the studio’s philosophy?
At SERIESNEMO we believe that creativity is strengthened by experiences. After 30 years of knowledge and strategic thinking our aim remains to create "Brave beverage brands through packaging".For us, packaging is related to design, but not only... or not simply. What we know as packaging design is the response to a previous reflection on branding, positioning, category reality, trends, industrialization, cost logistics... everything that makes it possible to build a strong brand. And the main representatives of that brand are, without a doubt, its products. The packaging of each one of the products must be closely aligned with its brand concept, which is what we call BrandPackaging. We consider this to be the fundamental premise for creating (and achieving) relevant products that excite the consumer and lead brands to success.
How does it feel to be crowned 2022 Design Agency of the Year?
First, we must express our special thanks to the Pentawards team for this exceptional recognition. Also, this year coincides with the celebration of SERIESNEMO's 30th anniversary as a design agency, so we couldn't be more prouder and excited.
In the second place, we feel an extreme responsibility. We know that it is a distinction with an immense worldwide impact, and this means continuing to work with great commitment, enthusiasm, and motivation to reaffirm this recognition... In addition, we are aware that during this year we will represent packaging designers and we must maintain the quality, relevance, and influence that this profession has in the field of consumer goods. On the other hand, with our work and communication, we must help new companies and brands recognize packaging design as a strategic value and consider agencies as fundamental partners in their business.We are ready to take all these new challenges on with the strongest conviction!
SERIESNEMO won 5 awards in the 2022 competition. What project did you enjoy working on the most and what was the creative idea behind the packaging?
Each of the products that we have developed during this year (and throughout our career) has been a new challenge and a professional motivation for the team. So, it is very difficult to choose just one of them...If we have to name a specific work, MATCH Tonic Water will be the SERIESNEMO project with the most repercussion this year, as it is becoming a representative brand in the e-commerce channel.SERIESNEMO has created a universe for MATCH that combines the neutrality of industrial minimalism with a chromatic range of pastel tones. This aesthetic has given rise to a set of contemporary tonics that create emotional bonds and seduce the consumer as soon as they are seen.
The synthesis of all the elements involved in the design is fully aligned to form the brand: compact, square bottles that fit in the hand. A minimalist graphic with a micro-perforation that we associate with the bubbles of the tonic, and a silky finish to the eye and touch.MATCH is a commitment to sustainability too, thanks to its stackable bottles of 100% recycled glass. Also, the 4-pack perfectly replicates the silhouette of the iconic MATCH bottle and is ultra-compactly designed to travel safely and cost-effectively. Ready to disrupt and excite the e-commerce market.
The entirety of all these factors and their interrelatedness captivates the consumer…seduces them and entices them to want to try MATCH. A unique bond is thus established... a perfect Match.
SERIESNEMO is also the champion of young designers and this year’s NXT-GEN winner Martí Garcés Muntalt, the latest talent to join their ranks.
Do you have any exciting projects coming up that you can share with us?
Following on from the previous question, for years we have identified e-commerce as a very growing and influential sector in global consumption. These products must reinvent their packaging in order to function optimally in these new communication and consumption platforms. Companies that focus their products on this type of distribution have very specific conditions and needs, ranging from weight optimization to visual impact and the ritual of reception and unboxing. Brands that have opted for this line of business have a profile of courage and daring that makes them ideal for proposing new types of packaging. In short, in e-commerce, packaging has an important strategic value that SERIESNEMO wants to help to enhance and highlight.

How do you find your design inspiration?
During these 30 years of profession, we have managed to modulate and perfect our design methodology. But perhaps our most recognizable characteristic is to start each product thinking about what happens outside its category. We are convinced that to start a relevant project our references must be as wide as possible. We prefer to be inspired by sectors that surprise our customers. In this way, both the partners and the team are extremely curious. We like to find aesthetics from different fields and personal interests (architecture, craftsmanship, travel, fashion, sport, cinema, interior design, art, etc...). We have the firm conviction that any manifestation of natural or human creation can be the seed of new packaging. The combination of the different interests of each member of the team enriches the dialogue and opens up possibilities that can be considered explorable.
What do you think is the biggest challenge for packaging in 2023?
As has been the case in previous years, the main challenge, in all sectors, continues to be finding sustainable solutions. It is a challenge that still has many routes to explore and, from our creative vision, many benefits can come through the incorporation of new formal and communication languages.
At SERIESNEMO we apply existing sustainability solutions and create new pathways that favour greener production.
An example of these new lines of action is what we at SERIESNEMO have called "imperfections are welcome". Imperfection exists in all aspects of life, it makes us human, it appeals to our understanding and solidarity, it allows us to integrate. In short, it avoids exclusion and... discarding! We believe that this commitment is the first step towards becoming sustainable. In addition, it has a favourable and enriching aspect in packaging, its application transmits truthfulness, originality, and craftsmanship (manual work). For years we have been creating products that integrate imperfections either in the packaging, in the graphics or in both: Gin Mare Capri, Wildly Crafted spirits, SUAU brandy, El Veguero rum, etc…
