JK Design Co crafted a retro 60’s-art-inspired visual identity for McMiller’s board game, Fire in the Hole.

McMiller Entertainment

McMiller Entertainment devised a category-busting party game on strategy and dexterity but needed a visual identity to bring the game to life. David McGranaghan and Julian Miller, co-founders and directors of McMiller Entertainment, tasked Milwaukee-based studio JK Design Co to deliver a packaging design that appealed to both adults and children.

Jim Kennelly, JK Design Co

Graphic Designer at JK, Jim Kennelly, took on the task with a clear notion to create a visual identity with a shelf standout amongst a sea of board games. The challenge for Kennelly was to deliver excitement coupled with simplicity in the final design.

Drawing inspiration from Japanese Kawaii fused with retro elements from the 60’s, the final visual identity of Fire in the Hole features a vibrant colour palette and a fun visual language.

The outstanding elements of Fire in the Hole’s packaging include an impressive pop-up pirate ship, which draws users' attention to the main elements of the game. The packaging takes on an eco-conscious approach, being 100% plastic-free, biodegradable, and carbon neutral.
