Persil goes out of the way to focus on making a change with their plastic-free packaging and now an Accessible QR Code feature making it inclusive. Unilever works in collaboration with Zappar, augmented reality specialists, and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).
Users with visual impairments can access information using their smartphones about the product, safety measures and recycling information. AQR is simple to use with a smartphone that audio-describes information, voice-guided formats and enlarged text for those with partial visual impairments.
Adoptable technology provides an inclusive solution helping improve the quality of life by integrating product accessibility, using existing g technology and embedding it in design. The new QR codes can be detected by any apps that integrate the technology, supporting the estimated 2 million blind and partially sighted people in the UK to access product information.
With the code front of the pack, accessibility apps can detect the product from over one meter away providing information such as ‘laundry detergent’ as well as more detailed product information such as usage information, how to open the box, safety warnings and recycling information as the user gets closer to the pack.
Unilever, Zappar and the RNIB’s shared ambition over time is to help drive a broader conversation around accessibility on consumer goods products and make accessibility to product information a standard for packaging design.
