AIDA Pioneer’s Akvavit bottle and label design celebrates the Scandinavian art of negotiating.

AIDA Pioneer’s Akvavit bottle and label design celebrates the Scandinavian art of negotiating.

Akvavit is a traditional Scandinavian spirit, distilled from grain and potatoes and infused with a variety of herbs and berries or citrus. As a popular and common drink on the market, brand design agency AIDA Pioneer set out to create something a little different and unexpected for their packaging and label design.

Back in 2004 Sweden and Denmark played a decisive match in the EUROs, battling for a chance to join the playoffs. The result of which ended in a 2:2 draw, controversially sending both teams through to the tournament. From this the term "Scandinavian draw" was coined, referring to the Scandinavian art of negotiating. This internationally recognised part of modern Scandinavian history became the key inspiration for AIDA Pioneer’s bottle and packaging design.

The unique bottle’s square shape refers to the football pitch on which the game was played, while rounded corners symbolise the softer side of negotiations. The 2:2 score sits proudly on the front of the label, reflecting the coming together of the two countries. The minimalistic design reflects the Scandinavian uncluttered style and desire for simplification while the soft blue tones offer a cool, refreshing aesthetic.
