PepsiCo makes a sustainable shift by replacing plastic rings with eco-friendly paperboard alternatives for multipack packaging in the US and Canada

PepsiCo takes significant steps towards sustainability by introducing eco-friendly paperboard alternatives to replace plastic rings in multipack packaging across the United States and Canada. This innovative packaging transition will be implemented gradually across various US regions, commencing later this year, while Canada is already in the midst of adopting the new solution.

The newly designed paperboard replacements incorporate recyclable features and user-friendly wrapping designs, ensuring they are environmentally conscious while also catering to the convenience of consumers and retailers. PepsiCo is committed to applying this change across its extensive range of beloved brands, including Pepsi, Starry, Gatorade, and MTN DEW. Additionally, the shift from plastic rings to paperboard will extend to the 7UP brand in Canada, where PepsiCo holds distribution rights beyond the borders of the United States.

This transformation from plastic to paperboard aligns with PepsiCo's overarching sustainability goals, which aim to cut the usage of virgin plastic from non-renewable sources by 50% per serving by the year 2030. This reduction target for plastic consumption forms an integral part of PepsiCo's comprehensive ESG (Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance) initiative known as "pep+" (PepsiCo Positive). The company's sustainability agenda also encompasses objectives such as achieving 20% of beverage servings through a reusable packaging model and reducing the total amount of non-renewable virgin plastic used by 20%.

PepsiCo's announcement closely follows Coca-Cola's adoption of Keel Clip paperboard toppers in the previous year, demonstrating a broader industry trend towards more sustainable packaging solutions.
