KJ Zhang delivers a soothing design offering balance and tranquillity for REFU Therapy Candles made with a unique twist.

REFU Candle packaging by designer KJ Zhang, made with sustainable materials, employs a skilful balance between serenity and strength, hard and soft. The soy wax candle is enclosed within a unique cement container made with reservoir silt. The strength from the concrete contrasts against the gentleness of the soy wax, harmonising with this sense of balance.

The curation of the outer box elements takes inspiration from the cement material, particularly with regards to the muted grey palette which corresponds with the natural cement colour. Its soft tone creates a sense of harmony, further complemented by the use of delicate white font and soothing passages. Balance is restored once again with the unpacking experience as the box opens to reveal the dark lining, juxtaposed against the soft grey and white. Light fleck detailing evokes a sense of cement dust, as if rubbed off the container, actively drawing us into the narrative.

Not only are the materials chosen for their sustainability and serene aesthetic but for product longevity as the containers also have good air permeability. The fragrance oil in the REFU Therapy Candle will diffuse gradually into the container once ignited. After that, even when the candle has not been lit, the container will naturally absorb the fragrance, turning itself into a cement fragrance diffuser.
