Japanese skincare brand SK-II joined forces with The Andy Warhol Foundation to release a limited-edition run of their cult SK-II Facial Treatment Essence. Andy Warhol’s distinct perspective on beauty considered everyone as equal, firmly believing that he’d never met a person he couldn’t call a beauty. This concept perfectly matched SK-II’s empowerment philosophy, making for an authentic central theme to the collaboration.
Manchester-based creative agency Love was tasked with creating something distinctly and uniquely Warhol while drawing on modern cultural references with messages of affirmation and empowerment. With so much of Warhol’s work being immediately recognisable, Love set out to explore something lesser known, digging deep into the archives and in the process rediscovering his love of broadcast media and its relationship with art and beauty, something still very relevant today.
Leaning into the retro style, Love utilizes Warhol’s iconic television technicolour test patterns. The icon bright shapes burst across the packaging immediately catching the eye. The outer box cunningly mimics the old VHS tapes from the 80s and 90s, further accentuating this retro aesthetic while the inner tube resembles rolls of film. The vivid patterns are further embellished with uplifting quotes said by Warhol accompanied by his distinctive signature along with QR codes to unlock further ‘broadcasts’ from the brand.
