Mitica is the flagship brand of Forever Cheese, a New York-based specialty food importer with over 25 years of authority in artisan Mediterranean products. The Mitica masterbrand is known for its warmth, playfulness, and deep roots in Mediterranean food culture. Its Parmigiano Reggiano selection — sourced from select farms and recognized with a World Cheese Award Super Gold and Best Italian Cheese — represents the top tier of the brand’s offering.
Forever Cheese needed retail packaging for a new line of fixed-weight Parmigiano Reggiano wedges: four distinct SKUs spanning different aging profiles, origins, and milk sources. The packaging had to extend the existing Mitica masterbrand into attainable luxury territory, create immediate shelf differentiation across the four SKUs, and hold together as a cohesive family, all without losing the approachability that had built Mitica’s reputation over two decades.

The specialty cheese category defaults to pastoral photography, rustic kraft textures, and soft-focus Italian landscapes. Design Womb strategic decision was to reject that entirely. Rather than adding visual decoration, they built a system on restraint and specificity. Typography, color, and material finish would do the work that photography typically handles, but with greater precision and a stronger point of view. The result needed to feel like an elevation of the masterbrand, not a departure from it.

The packaging system is built on three core elements working in concert. Deep, saturated matte paper wraps drawn from Mitica’s signature Mediterranean palette anchor each SKU in a distinct colorway — rich blues, greens, and earthy tones that differentiate immediately on shelf while reading as a unified family. Gold foil stamping was introduced across the line for the first time in the brand’s history, set in deliberate contrast against the matte substrate.
A custom typographic system, inspired by the editorial tradition of Italian graphic design and vintage Italian type foundries, replaces photography as the primary storytelling mechanism. Each wrap communicates variety, aging, and origin with precision and confidence. The Mitica wordmark anchors every SKU; a custom icon or badge at center carries each product’s individual narrative.
The wedge-shaped paper wraps echo the iconic geometry of a slice off of a Parmigiano wheel — a quiet formal gesture that connects the retail product to its origin without a single word. The four SKUs: the classic 24-month; the crystal-studded 36-month reserve; the Montagna, made exclusively in the mountains of Parma; and the Disolabruna, crafted only from the milk of the rare Bruna Alpina breed.
The results are a packaging system that successfully extends the Mitica masterbrand into the premium retail tier. Cheese packaging design that is recognizably Mitica, and unmistakably elevated.
