THE PENTAWARDS FESTIVAL 2020

Pentawards, the world's leading packaging design competition, hosted its first ever online festival featuring a two-day conference and Gala Ceremony revealing this year's competition winners.

Stefan Sagmeister

Why Beauty Matters

Stefan Sagmeister will share examples from architecture, design and science to show how beauty goes deeper than the surface and affects how people feel and behave.

Stefan is a renowned Austrian born New York-based graphic designer, storyteller, and typographer. He is a two-time Grammy Award winner, who has designed album covers for Lou Reed, OK Go, The Rolling Stones, David Byrne, Jay Z, Aerosmith and Pat Metheny.

Ashwini Deshpande, Elephant Design - India

Understanding Cultural Meaning to Strengthen Brands & Packaging

Culture and Colour are topics close to Ashwini's heart. She has been part of an extensive research project titled "Colours of Asia" that involved deep enquiry into cultural colour codes across 13 Asian countries. She will share examples of communication, brands and packaging that are born out of cultural codes.

Ashwini is the Co-Founder Director of Elephant Design, India's largest independent integrated design consultancy, and has done award-winning work for global brands in diverse segments.

Breaking New Ground: How a startup business designed packaging through innovation

This session will look at how Xiaomi used innovation in packaging design to help turn the start-up into a Fortune 500 company in just nine years.

As a start-up company, Xiaomi had very limited capital and resources to develop products. Despite the limitations, how did Xiaomi's designers use design innovation to create packaging that met product and market needs? How do they optimize packaging costs through design and help Xiaomi products quickly gain users and market share?

Chen Lu is the Design Director of Xiaomi and has over 14 years of experience in packaging and graphic design.

Checking In: Mental Health session

Mental health is something that can be an issue for many of us year round, and 2020 has been a testing year. In this session, Paul will be talking about the importance of mental health providing practical advice alongside sharing his own personal story. He'll discuss the importance of vulnerability, self care strategies to help you proactively manage your own mental health, advice on supporting others alongside how everyone plays a part in eradicating stigma.

Paul McGregor is a mental health campaigner, author, speaker and Founder of Everymind at Work, and has worked with companies such as Warner Bros, Lloyds TSB and The FA.

John Glasgow, Vault 49 - US & UK

Black People: You belong here

"The truth is that it is still uncommon for a black man or woman to be the founder of a global design agency. Up to now, I have kept a low profile because that’s my nature, but I want to say this loud and clear: Vault49 is co-founded by a Black Man".

In this presentation John will share his journey – starting with his beginnings in design, onto street art and then scaling a global agency. He will talk about the lucky breaks, the twists and turns, and his experience of being black in a white space.

John Glasgow is the Co-Founder & ECD of global design agency Vault 49 and is committed to encouraging cultural diversity within the design industry.

This presentation aims to highlight homogeneous tendencies in graphic design, and how the "play it safe" approach stifles fun and imagination.

Daniele is Director, Brand & Packaging Design | Consumables Private Brands at Amazon USA, and transformed brands like Starbucks, Tazo and more recently a portfolio of more than a dozen private brands, owned by Amazon.
